Vandana, a grade five student says about her studies: “I enjoy learning English,” she says in Kannada, India. “If I read and write English, I can become a doctor.” Vandana previously would struggle in school, so she sat awake at nights for a whole month, writing English words and their phonic sounds in Kannada, memorizing the sound combinations. She later became enrolled in Akshara's English program. Now Vandana is the best student in class. She has benefited enormously from Akshara’s English program, says Kalpavalli, her teacher. With the right matrix in school to grow and flourish, Vandana can pull herself out of her self-limiting circumstances and discover her true potential.

There is a devastating lack of quality pre-school education in the public pre-school system. There are poor learning outcomes in the public primary school system in language and math, which affect approximately seven million children in the age group of 4-14 years in the state of Karnataka, India.
What we do
The Akshara Foundation develops and scales sustainable solutions to improve learning outcomes in the public pre-primary and primary school systems. Some of the specific solutions are "prepare, not repair" for state-run ECD centers, an Akshara Ganitha math program and reading proficiency programs for both English and the mother tongue.

Their solutions are available to all around the world under a Creative Commons Framework. Akshara also brings out solutions that are effective, scalable and low-cost, thus making it affordable for maximum reach.
