Safe Sanitation - Venture
Maria's family was suffering from diarrhea on account of the hygiene situation in her home. When she received an x-runner toilet the began to suffer less, and consequently, spend less: usually they would spend up to $8 when one of them was suffering from acute diarrhea. Indeed, her days started easing to such an extent that Maria was comfortable to take on a half-day job again and was again able to contribute to the family income. *Name changed.
Updates from the field:
Lima (Peru) is the 2nd water scarcest capital in the world. The current paradigm of water-based toilets is destined to fail here; a reliable sanitation alternative is needed. Safe sanitation protects the environment, families' health and habitats.
What we do
x-runner is a sustainable sanitation enterprise addressing the needs of the urban poor with a waterless sanitation system. With its system, x-runner can keep fecal pathogens out of waters and grounds. This has a positive impact not only on its customers, but on the entire neighborhood. x-runner operates in Lima, Peru.
What distinguishes us?
x-runner is Latin America's first waterless, urban sanitation service for the private home. It offers a customized, efficient, and sustainable solution to meet the challenges of low-income households that do not have access to safe sanitation possibilities. When a family subscribes, the enterprise's technical team goes to their home and installs a waterless toilet. The waste, instead of being flushed away, is separated from the urine inside the toilet, then covered with a bit of sawdust, and finally collected in a compostable bag. This way, the toilet prevents flies and bad odors. Once a week the x-runner truck goes by the communities and picks up the waste bags. The collected waste is then transported to the treatment facility where it undergoes a natural treatment and is processed into compost.
